MUST READ ~ Basic eBay Tips

The following are basic eBay tips posted by eBayer azleena_wm.

eBay is only an internet trading-ground. It is the responsibility of the eBayer to take proper precautions to avoid being scammed.

It is the responsibility of the buyer to do their own research about the
eBay system, the feedback system and about the sellers, to use logic and to choose to buy from reputable sellers. Either a buyer can choose to "buy" an item at a very low price from a seller with questionable feedback and maybe not receive the item or recover his money, or else pay full price at a local store and get a genuine item with full warranty.

It is the responsibility of the seller to ensure payment is received in full before shipping, and not to be blinded by offers of big money to be paid by unsafe payment methods.

TIPS FOR BUYING ON
EBAY:

1. Understand the feedback system, and read the seller’s feedback thoroughly!
A seller’s feedback is the only way to indicate whether the seller can be trusted (and even then, there is no guarantee – feedback can be faked!).

[For more info on feedback, read on]

2. Do not buy expensive items (plasma screen tvs, handphones, iPods, Mini O2s, laptops, notebooks) seling at ridiculously cheap prices from brand new sellers with no feedback, especially (but not limited to) from overseas!

Many Malaysians have been scammed. If you see any suspicious auctions, please report them (http://www.ebay.com.my/helpTSForm) and prevent more Malaysians from losing their money.

3. Read every word of the item details before bidding.
Sometimes sellers ‘sell’ an e-book, a catalog or an URL to a website where you can buy the item you think you are bidding on! If you see any, report them (http://www.ebay.com.my/helpTSForm).

4. Use logic
For items that are priced far below retail price, ask yourself if it is logical that you will get a genuine item for that price… if you receive anything at all! Items priced far below market price are usually either fakes or scams. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Also, beware of listings that only have standard photographs, item specifications and writeups that were probably taken from the manufacturer’s website. Anyone can make up these listings.

5. If the shipping and handling costs are not mentioned in the auction details, ask before bidding.
Especially if you are buying items from overseas - the shipping costs can easily exceed the item cost!

6. Ask the seller any questions before bidding.
A genuine seller will be happy to give you detailed answers to any questions about the item and his terms of auction. If a seller will not answer questions about his items or terms, this gives you an indication of his integrity.

7. Read all the auction terms carefully and make sure you can comply, before bidding.
Check the accepted payment method and expected payment time frame.

8. Do not bid unless you sincerely intend to buy the item!
Your bid is a contract. Honour it.

TIPS FOR SELLING ON EBAY

1. Be detailed
Include as many details of your item as possible.

2. State your auction terms clearly
You should indicate your preferred payment method, expected payment timeframe, and shipping costs clearly to avoid misunderstandings.

3. Take digital photographs of your item
Standard photos from the manufacturer’s website look nicer, but do take a photo yourself too, so the buyer feels more assured you actually have the item in your possession and can see the actual condition.

4. Screen your bidders
You can view your bidder’s feedback page to check their feedback record. You have the right to cancel or block their bids if they do not meet your stated auction terms.

5. Receive payment in full before sending out your items!
A common scam is for a scammer to email a seller requesting to buy an item for many times the retail price with payment via Western Union, and wanting immediate shipping (usually to Nigeria/Africa). The seller will then receive an email supposedly from Western Union, saying that the money has been paid and the seller must ship the item immediately. The seller then never receives his payment.

Even with a cheque or money order, make sure it clears and you get the cash before you send the item out!

6. Build your reputation
You could start off by buying things and selling smaller things or accessories before gradually moving into selling expensive things, if this is your objective.

http://www.ebay.com.my/helpIndex?page=helpBuildRep

7. Hits
You can put a free counter on your auctions to know how many people looked at each auction. If your auction is not getting any hits, then you’ll know it’s time to change the title, photo or price to make it more attractive.

http://www.andale.com

8. Shipping
Always ship your items using a registered method, either PosLaju or PosDaftar. This way, you can track the shipping status via the Pos Malaysia website, and there will be no claims that the buyer did not receive his item.

OTHER TIPS

1. Security
eBay (and PayPal, as well as your local bank) will NOT ask you personal questions in an email, and will NOT send you emails asking you to click on a link provided within the email. If you do click on the link (and fill in your details in the fake website), your account may be hijacked. This scam is known as “pfishing”. Learn more: http://pages.ebay.com/securitycenter/

2. Tools
Take a moment to browse this site:
http://pages.ebay.com/sitemap.html?ssPageName=h:h:smap:US

Here you will find many tools and advanced options to manage your items for sale, bids and feedback.

3. Help
You can contact eBay directly using these webform with any questions or concerns.

FEEDBACK
This is how feedback works:

Scenario 1:
You go to a pasar malam. You see a seller selling a plasma screen tv for RM2000. You are interested, but your friends tell you they recently bought tvs from him and they are all fake or they never got them!

This is an example of a seller with negative feedback.

Scenario 2:
A stranger on the street offers to sell you a plasma screen tv for RM2000, if you give him the cash he will go home and get it for you right away.

This is an example of a brand new seller with no feedback and highly doubtful trustability.

Scenario 3:
Your good friend introduces you to his friend selling a plasma screen tv for a bit below retail price. The seller will sell for cash on delivery in certain locations, but is willling to send it to you if you are outstation. This friend has bought one from him and is very happy with it. The seller can also give you a referral list of people who have bought plasma tvs from him, and you can see the names of established and trusted society members on the list. You can even contact the referrals if you need any more info from them.

This is an example of an established seller with many positive feedbacks.

Admittedly, the ONLY way to make sure you will actually receive an original item with full warranty is to pay retail price and buy it from an authorised shop. But the feedback system can give you a good indication of whether a seller can be trusted, if you interpret and study it properly.

Firstly, understand how the feedback system works:
http://www.ebay.com.my/helpIndex?page=helpPolFdbk

However, just because a seller has a high feedback score, does not automatically mean he is trustable.

It is possible for an eBay account to be hijacked. The hijacker can then use the seller’s good name to create scam auctions.

Also, a seller’s feedback can be faked – either by opening multiple accounts and giving feedback to himself, or by selling and buying cheap or free things to increase his feedback score.

[Note: I am not saying that buying or selling cheap or free things is wrong. However, it is something a potential buyer should take into account when deciding whether to bid on an expensive item. For example, if a seller who has previously sold only Gmail accounts suddenly sells an expensive laptop, you should be wary]

Also, there will always be genuine new sellers just starting on eBay with no feedback. If you are an aware and careful buyer, and ask questions, you will be able to tell whether a listing is logical and real.

FEEDBACK CHECKLIST
If you are thinking of bidding for an EXPENSIVE item, these are the things you should look for on the seller’s feedback page:

- feedback score… must be a HIGH score with almost all positive
- any negative feedback? Why? You can ask for an explanation from the seller or the previous buyer, if they did not leave a follow-up reply or comment.
- is the feedback mostly from sellers or buyers? You should buy from a seller who has sold a lot and has many satisfied buyers.
- what else has he sold recently? Has he sold any similar items? Were his previous buyers happy?
are his previous buyers established eBayers with lots of feedback, or all new members?
- are the language and the words in the feedback from the previous buyers very similar? If yes, this may indicate fake feedback.
- you can check the time the feedback was left by the previous buyer and seller. I have seen cases in which the buyer and seller left feedback for each other within 2 minutes of each other!
- you can even go down a layer and investigate the feedback of the people who left feedback for your seller!

Troublesome? Yes. But it would be even more troublesome to ‘donate’ hundreds or thousands of ringgit to a scammer.

COMMON SCAMS
Laptops from Romania
Plasma TVs from Italy
iPods and handphones from China/Beijing/Hong Kong/Taiwan
buyers who email sellers wanting to buy their item urgently above the market price, want to pay by Western Union or BidPay and want immediate shipping to Africa, especially Nigeria.

Important Information about Scam e-mails

The following information are compiled by an eBay member Hallowt.

***PLEASE DO NOT BE A VICTIM and fall prey to these scam artists. They are out there lurking, just waiting to steal your identity ----- just waiting to spend your hard earned money, while they sit on their rear ends....taking vacations...bidding and stealing items from other sellers...

Have you recently received an email asking for personal information such as credit card number, Social Security number, passwords, etc. ????

PLEASE PROTECT yourself and be AWARE that, Neither
eBay nor PayPal will EVER under ANY circumstances....ever, request personal information in the form of an email. Be on your toes because these emails can appear to be official, but BELIEVE me you, they are NOT. THEY ARE SCAMS!!! I CAN'T stress this fact enough!!! They are called PHISING EMAILS. These scam artists are trying to get you to give them your personal information. These emails do not, come from anyone at eBay or PayPal.

If you receive an email such as this, requesting such things as Password, social security number, or Credit Card number, or asking questions about an item you are NOT selling, or an email asking you about an item you never bid on…..or an email asking you what your date of birth is.....It is a scam, led by these scam artists, who are trying to steal your personal information. These emails generally contain links. DO NOT click any of those links. If you do, delete all your cookies, temp internet files, and run a virus scan. If you have spyware software, run a trojan scan.

If you have received an email of this sort, forward it directly to:

spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com

For more information on scam "spoof" emails see this link:

and this information filled discussion thread:

http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.jsp?forum=107&thread=2324299&modifed=20031226100841

***Also keep in mind that eBay does not take deposit accounts from sellers, nor do they have a big warehouse where they store items for sellers!

Remember if you receive a telephone call from someone claiming to be with
eBay, never give out personal information such as address...credit card..or Social Security number over the phone. If it is really eBay, they will have all that info already......all updates should made directly from your..."MY EBAY" page...and always do so while you are signed in directly to eBay and not via an indirect URL.

Warning ~ Phishing Mail From "eBay"

Red Alert to all eBay members!

There has been an e-mail purportedly from eBay with the Subject: Ebay Inc. Annual Update of Records seemingly from security@ebay.com

Here is the official confirmation from eBay that the above e-mail definitely DID NOT originate from eBay.

Hello,

Thank you for writing to eBay regarding the email you received.

Emails such as this, commonly referred to as "spoof" or "phished"
messages, are sent in an attempt to collect sensitive personal or
financial information from the recipients.

The email you reported was not sent by eBay. We have reported this email
to the appropriate authorities.

In the future, be very cautious of any email that asks you to submit
information such as your credit card numbers or passwords. If you are
ever concerned about an email you receive from eBay, simply follow these
steps:

1. Open a new Web browser and type www.ebay.com into your browser
address field to go directly to the eBay site.

2. On eBay, click on the "My eBay" link at the top of the page and sign
into your account.

3. Check the "My Messages" link located on the left side of the My eBay
page. If an email affects your eBay account, it's now in "My Messages."
Any email sent to your registered eBay email address from eBay or from
another eBay member via eBay's member-to-member communication system
will also appear in "My Messages."

Just remember, if you get an email regarding a problem with your account
or that is requesting personal information, and the email looks like it
is from eBay, please check My Messages first. If it's not there, it's a
fake email.

If you still have any doubt about whether an email message is from eBay,
please forward it to spoof@ebay.com immediately. Do not respond to it or
click any of the links. Do not remove the original subject line or
change the email in any way when you forward it to eBay.

If you have already entered sensitive personal information, financial
information, or your password into a Web site based on a request from a
spoofed email, you should take immediate action to protect your identity
and all of your online accounts. We have developed an eBay Help page
with valuable information regarding the steps you should take to protect
yourself.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/tp/isgw-account-theft-reporting.html

To review eBay's new tutorial about Spoof Emails, please see the
following Web page:

http://pages.ebay.com/education/spooftutorial/

To help you better protect yourself from fake eBay and PayPal Web sites,
we have developed a feature for the eBay Toolbar called "Account Guard."
Account Guard includes an indicator of when you are on an eBay or PayPal
Web site or a known spoof (or "phishing") site, buttons to report fake
eBay Web sites, and a password notification feature that warns you when
you may be entering your eBay password on an unverified site.

To learn more about the eBay Toolbar with Account Guard, please go to
www.ebay.com, click on "Downloads" at the bottom of the page, and then
click on the "eBay Toolbar" link.

We also recommend that you keep your browser, operating system, and
virus protection software up to date. Check for updates at the "Windows
Update" link on www.microsoft.com and scan your computer for viruses
often.

Once again, thank you for alerting us to the spoof email you received.
Your efforts help keep eBay a safe and fair place to trade.

7 Questions to Ponder Upon AFTER Winning An Auction

Further to my post on 13 Flags to Warn a Bidder of a Fradulant Transaction on eBay, the following are more points to ponder upon if you have committed yourself to an auction.

How do I protect myself from fraud if I have already won an auction?
There a number of things to keep in mind before sending your money to a seller that has little or no feedback for selling.

How does the auction hold up against these 7 questions?
1. Does he have feedback for selling? (does he have negative feedback for deadbeat bidding)
2. Was the auction posted for only a few days?
3. Were there pictures?
4. Is there a detailed description of the item?
5. Was the price way too good to be true?
6. Is the seller offering unusual perks like a "10 day inspection period"?
7. Has this seller answered questions about the item in an acceptable manner?
Make sure and get a valid phone number for the seller. If he gives you a fake one, contact
eBay immediately. You are not required to complete any sale in which the seller or an employee of the seller does not make himself available for a phone conversation.

Verify the seller's name and address. If you get a bad feeling about an auction contact
eBay and they can check the name the seller wishes to have the check written out to, against the name on his Auction account.

eBay can be contacted at: http://pages.ebay.com/help/contact_inline/index.html

Having said these, please bid responsibly. A bid is a contract to purchase.

Low-Down On Achieving PowerSeller Status on eBay

It's said that being a PowerSeller on eBay will attract more sales. It's sort of like a Badge of Confidence.

Here's the basic criteria of being awarded PowerSeller status:
You need a minimum of 100 feedback.
You need a minimum of 98% positive feedback rating.
You need an accumulated sales of USD1000 per month, for three consecutive months.

This amount varies from ebay to ebay site. For
eBay UK, it's about GBP600, for eBay Australia, it is AUD2000.

eBay will send out an invitation to you, if you qualify but be careful, there are alot of fake invites out there, so you need to ensure that the invitation is legit and from eBay itself.

Protecting Your Images

There's always the risk of image theft when listing images up in our auctions. Therefore, it's advisable to place watermark on your images before putting them up in public.

The following are a few watermark freeware, listed in random order. Feel free to try and choose the one you are most comfortable with.

uMark
Merge
pdf Watermark Creator

I'm too lazy to spend time watermarking my images, so let me know which software you like most, after trying them out. If you know of any other watermarking software that's free to use, do drop me the link. Thanks!

Free Thumbnail Listing on Lelong.com.my!

Wooohooooo Lelong.com.my is offering FREE thumbnail listing for all items listed "For Auction" or "For Sale" in two catergories, namely "Clothing & Accessories" and "Jewelry, Gemstone & Accessories" with effect from 19th May, 2006 until further notice.

This feature is normally charged MYR0.30 per listing.... AND NOW IT'S FREE! Isn't that great?

Browsers (potential buyers) need not click on the item link to preview the photo, but it will also lessen click through rates and so potential browsers will most probably skip reading item descriptions.

I'm not sure if using this feature will boost sales, but since it's free, it'll be a good trial run.

Thank you,
Lelong!

M - O - T - H - E - R

M - O - T - H - E - R
"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
"MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me.
Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

And now here's my own attempt at writing a short Mother's Day poem:
I have no fear,
When you're near.
You're my shining light,
You're always right.
You're kind,
Pure in mind.
Mummy dearest,
You're the greatest!

More Reminders on Phishing

I have blogged on Phishing last month here.

Today, I'd like to remind all email users not to simply click on links on email, especially those that require input of sensitive information, for example password, credit card number, social security number, etc.

A fake website may look exactly like the authentic one and it can fool us into thinking that is the "real" site.

The best way to avoid information leak is to just open a new browser and type in the full URL into the address bar.

If you suspect that your information is compromised, straight away change your password, and if necessary, contact your financial institution to stop unauthorised transactions, and also have your computer disconnected from the internet and scanned for spyware at once.

To all non-Buddhist, I wish you Happy holidays. May you be able to spend quality time with your loved ones during the long weekend.

Any Update on Cyber Laws?

Although being an online trader myself, sometimes I wish there's tighter cyber laws to curb the already rampant cyber fraud cases that are happening in popular auction sites and other similar trading platforms.

Yes, bringing in more laws will indeed curb genuine traders like myself as well, but I can see that it will be beneficial to all of us in the long run. IF there are effective rules applied, I'm sure buyers confidence will be raised.

And with buyers confidence raised, more and more people will venture into online shopping and naturally, this benefits the sellers too.

Right now, online shopping in Malaysia is still very much in its infancy. People are afraid of losing money to fraudulant sales and this is understandable when there are not many laws that can protect a buyer.

However, once the buyer-seller relationship is established between a genuine buyer and a genuine seller, future transactions will be smooth sailing.

A successful transaction is not only when payment is made on time, but also goods received in good order. A successful transaction is when both buyer and seller are open to communication and satisfied with the deal.

Happy trading!

We ALL Start From ZERO ........

Yes, we all start with ZERO feedback, from the very bottom.

However, I feel that newbies in online trading, especially buyers with zero or only a handful of positives from penny auctions, need to buck up in their communication (with the sellers) and payment.

Otherwise, they are just closing the door on themselves, when more and more serious sellers block these newbies off from bidding in future auctions due to the "bad" experience from previous dealing.

Why does a newbie wanna get himself sidelined? It's his own loss, right?

Just my thoughts this morning .......

Seller's 10 RED Flags

Some time back, I blogged on signs to look out for when bidding on eBay or any similar auction site or trading platform on the internet.

The post was titled: 13 Flags to Warn a Bidder of a Fraudulent Transaction on eBay

Today, I'm going to blog on what a Seller should look out for to avoid possible scam from so-called buyers.

Here is a list of things you should look out for as a seller to avoid a possible scam.

Seller's 10 red flags:
1: Buyer offers to pay you way more than the actual value of the item if you will end the auction early.

2: Buyer is in Nigeria/Indonesia/Romania (no offense to honest buyers from these countries) and wants to pay you using Western Union money order.

3: Buyer keeps asking you to send item before you have cash in your hands.

4: Buyer wants you to ship by FedEx overnight.

5. Wants to buy off-eBay or whatever auction site or trading platform.

6. Wants to pay with a credit card using seller's merchant account.

7. Zero feedback member, usually registered on the same day they contact the seller, or only a day or two prior to the contact.

8: Interested in high-priced item (inconclusive if not in combination with other red flags)

9. E-mail written in broken English (also inconclusive all by itself, but could reinforce other red flags).

10. Buyer asks you to send the item to relatives or friends (usually in another country).

Weird Al Yankovic's eBay Song

Well, I finally, finally, finally got the song uploaded. Click HERE to listen to the song. I have also appended the lyrics below so that we can all sing-along. Yeahhh :-p

Weird Al Yankovic - eBay Song Lyrics
(sang to the tune of I Want It That Way by Backstreet Boys)

Yeah ....
A used ... pink bathrobe
A rare ... mint snowglobe
A Smurf ... TV tray
I bought on eBay

My house ... is filled with this crap
Shows up in bubble wrap
Most every day
What I bought on eBay

Tell me why (I need another pet rock)
Tell me why (I got that Alf alarm clock)
Tell me why (I bid on Shatner's old toupee)
They had it on eBay

I'll buy ... your knick-knack
Just check ... my feedback
"A++!" they all say
They love me on eBay

Gonna buy (a slightly-damaged golf bag)
Gonna buy (some Beanie Babies, new with tag)
(From some guy) I've never met in Norway
Found him on eBay

I am the type who is liable to snipe you
With two seconds left to go, whoa
Got Paypal or Visa, whaterev'll please
As long as I've got the dough

I'll buy ... your tchotchkes
Sell me ... your watch, please
I'll buy (I'll buy, I'll buy, I'll buy ...)
I'm highest bidder now

(Junk keeps arriving in the mail)
(From that worldwide garage sale)(Dukes Of Hazard ashtray)
(Hey! A Dukes Of Hazard ashtray)
Oh yeah ... (I bought it on eBay)

Wanna buy (a PacMan Fever lunchbox)
Wanna buy (a case on vintage tube socks)
Wanna buy (a Kleenex used by Dr. Dre, Dr. Dre)
(Found it on eBay)

Wanna buy (that Farrah Fawcet poster)
(Pez dispensers and a toaster)
(Don't know why ... the kind of stuff you'd throw away)
(I'll buy on eBay)

One Good Turn Deserves Another

Last month, I wrote about having to queue up for ages to ship out Poslaju packages here and here.

Yesterday afternoon, once again, I was at the post office and took a ticket number with 40 people in the queue before me. So, I went to the side counter to ship out my airmail letters and Pos Ekspres packages first and prepared to wait out the queue.

There wasn't anywhere to sit even, so I stood by the door.

Guess what? One lady, after finishing her business, passed me a ticket number, and straight away that number was called out!

I was so surprised, I didn't even get to say a proper "Thank you". You can image how happy I was, that I only waited a total of less than 10 minutes, when that queue of 40 people would easily take at least 30 minutes, as there were only two (AGAIN TWO ONLY!) counters opened.

It's true that one good turn deserves another.

I came across this website which I'd like to share with you. It contains a lot of comprehensive write-outs on buying and selling on eBay. It also answers questions that come to mind, if one is considering to eBay full-time and a whole lot more FAQs, in layman's terms.

Hope you'll have a better insight on eBay ;-)

1st May ~ Labour Day

Today, 1st of May, is Labour Day, a public holiday in Malaysia.

I wonder why public holidays are called "Hari Kelepasan".... I used to know it as "Cuti Am". Does "Hari Kelepasan" mean a day we are free from work? Hehehehe

As usual, there's no shipping today. It will resume tomorrow, 2nd of May, 2006.
