First of all, how much is your budget for advertising and marketing? How do you plan to sell your items?
If you're going to start big, you can advertise in newspapers, magazines or radio. The bigger circulation they have, the more expensive they are. You can buy spots for banner ads on websites or place premium ads in classifieds boards. The higher the traffic, the more expensive they are.

BUT you can always use free services or deploy the help of friends and family to spread the word.
You can post a sticky on your local advertisement board like 7-11 but that would only reach out to a small community.
Email is a powerful mode of advertisement. Just add your URL as your signature in the email, and forward something funny to your friends. They will forward it to their friends and so on, and you're sure to get some free eyeballs. Of course, you're not supposed to spam.
Make use of forums by adding your URL in the signature and and start posting in the threads.
You can also leave constructive comments on other people's blogs. Bloggers and blog readers are always curious about who reads what blogs, and they will surely click on your profile.
Participate in link or banner exchange programs where you give each other reciprocal linkbacks.
Make friends with people who own blogs and websites.
I hope that my tips are helpful. These are what I did too, except the begging part, hahaha!
