As the holiday season nears, there have been cases where people have bought fraudulent gift cards online or through auctions.
The National Retail Federation has cautioned shoppers to take measures not to fall into this scam.

Make sure to double check the section on the back of the card where the personal identification information is before you purchase it – if it appears to already be scratched off, take it to a customer service representative
Only purchase gift cards from reputable sources and not online auction sites where they are likely to be counterfeit or were fraudulently obtained.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend buying gift certificates or discount coupons online. One wouldn't know if it's a genuine card or not, or it has expired or been tampered with. Buying things like this need physical examination of the card, me thinks.
