I was first introduced to an African American Folk Artist named Purvis Young by my friend, Paul.
Paul works as an architect and designer in New York City. He himself only came to know of Purvis recently when he was doing research on Hospitality Photography for his design work.
Coincidentally, some of the photographs that he came across are by the New York artist Daniel Aubrey, who also owns an art gallery in New York and is currently hosting an art exhibition of selected Purvis Young art.

Paul told me that visits to the Purvis Young exhibition is by appointment only but he managed to get in and came away awed by the pure talent and raw emotions that came across from the artwork of Purvis Young.
Purvis Young himself is a very remarkable man. He continues to paint from the ghettos of Miami despite his fame and fortune. Perhaps to continue living and painting in squalid conditions only can he transfer the sufferings onto his art.
Today, Purvis Young continues to pain with furor, packing in 10 - 15 hours of painting a day, whist battling with severe diabetes that he has been suffering from for ten years.
It is truly wonderful that despite his unconventional ways, the talent of Purvis Young is recognized and is celebrated.
