There are actually still people who bid on an item without knowing full well the condition of the item. The proper thing to do is to ask first if there is any doubt and then make a decision to bid or stay away.
This is usually committed by people who are new to the online auction scene. I was one such person too and bidding excitedly when the auction was about to end, thinking that when it ends, I will never have the chance to buy it. Little did I know that Sellers list and relist until there is a genuine Buyer.
Luckily for me, the Seller was generous enough to let me off the hook when I decided to back out of the deal after getting his reply about the actual condition of the item. It was a computer system.
I believe, my trading profile proved that I am a genuine Buyer since I had previously bought a similar priced computer system as well.
Anyway, the point is, to avoid all the hassle, misunderstanding and sour taste, the Buyer should pose all questions first before bidding.
