In a landmark move, Craigslist removed permanently adult ad listings from its US classifieds site, bowing to pressure from law enforcement and Congress. Craigslist has been the target of lawmakers these past few years because of its massive listings of adult ads, which law enforcers also say promoted trafficking of women and children and prostitution. Some people became murder victims after making contact through Craigslist.
To address this, Craigslist started charging users of its Adults section a fee, where they collected credit card information which allowed them to hand over such user information to the police if necessary. Craigslist also used part of such money collected for charity. This year, Craigslist has so far earned about US$30 million from this section alone. The rest of its classifieds site remains free.
Even though the Adults section has dropped in the US site, people are still free to list such Adults services on Craigslist's other global sister sites and have no plans to remove those. And even as Craigslist removed the Adults section from the US site, they are not fully agreeable to the action, saying that this will only drive people who use such services to go to other smaller sites.
