Dell Lays Off 700 In Penang, Malaysia

Dell, the maker of personal computes, will lay off 700 employees in the Penang plant in Malaysia beginning January 2010. This exercise will run until June, 2010. 700 account for 16% of the total workforce in Malaysia including those with Dell in the capital city.

I have a few friends who are with Dell in Penang. Even though they are still uncertain of their position, they are quite optimistic that even if they opt for the Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), they will be duly compensated and they will have no problems securing a job with another organization, thanks to their experience with Dell. Moreover, my friends are still young and age is on their side.

I guess when the New Year rolls around, they will know for sure who will leave and who will stay. In any case, I wish them all the best!
