This year, it is said that almost US$1 billion was spent on unwanted Christmas gifts. Unwanted here means that the gifts were not wanted by the recipient either because the recipient already has the same item or he/she has no use for it at the moment. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the gifts and could be regifted, exchanged or returned for cash provided the recipient has the receipt as well, which is rare.
Gifts cards make great gifts in cases like these, but even then, there are people who do not like the gift cards they have received. Perhaps there is nothing tat to buy from a particular specialty store. Well, the good news is that people can swap their gift cards, if they don't plan to sell them off on eBay or Craigslist for cash, though at a lower than face value.
Sometimes, I think that gifting something that the recipient really wants is as tough as winning the Jackpot. I guess that is why online wishlists are getting more and more popular now.
