Recently, I went to almost all the stores in Kinta City and Ipoh Parade and I noticed something. Each time I stepped into the store, I was greeted with "WELCOME". HHmm it was pretty odd. What do you reply to WELCOME? Thank you? But I was just there to ask if they do have leather laptop backpacks and had no intention to purchase anything at all if they do not have the laptop backpack that I want. That’s why it was pretty awkward.
I think that these stores must have received directive from the managements of the malls to greet their customers with WELCOME. For most these sales boys and girls, their command of the English language stops there. So even if you may be greeted with the word WELCOME, it does not mean that you will be understood when you ask them a question in English following the WELCOME greeting.
