My friend got married a few months ago, and even though he and his wife have been together for a few years, he still could not decide if he wants to hold a joint bank account with her. His wife is all for it but he is afraid that he will lose his money to her. I guess it's because he earns many times more than her that he feels insecure giving her control of his money.
Frankly, when I am married, I too do not know if I want to hold a joint bank account with my husband. If he wants one, I would probably have one and yet still keep the bulk of my money in my individual bank account. Yes, I am this careful. After all, there are no guarantees in life.
Although many of my married friends hold joint bank accounts with their spouse, and for some of them, that is the only bank account they have and they are very comfortable with the arrangement, I think it's too risky for me. I guess it's because of an incident that happened to a neighbour of mine many years that left a deep impression on me, even though I was very young back then.
When my friend asked me for my opinion if he should open a joint account with his wife, I told him to go ahead. Hahaha! He’s a guy and he has nothing to lose, right?
