Bigfoot Hoax Body & Display eBay Auction Topped US$250,000

Last week, when I came across this auction on eBay with a starting bid of US$499, I wondered how much people would be willing to pay for this Bigfoot Halloween costume that made the headlines in August earlier this year.

If you have read the news, you would know that in August, two guys declared that they discovered the body of Bigfoot and that they were awaiting post mortem. Well, their story was later declared as a hoax and one of the guys even lost his job for pulling such a trick.

The Bigfoot eBay auction just closed awhile ago with the winning bid at US$250,283. The sellers said that the sale of their Bigfoot, dubbed the "RickMatt" creature, would help them to settle legal fees that they have incurred for pulling a hoax. They also plan to use a portion of money from this auction on the Hoax Research Center which one of the guys owns.

I am now wondering if this auction will be transacted at this final auction price. As you may be aware, although all bids are supposed to be contractual, there would still be people playing the fool and bidding for fun, and then claiming that they have placed their bid in error or that it was done by a child in the household. Anyway, a bid is a three-step process so I don't think that young children just playing around would successfully go through all the steps to place a bid.

In any case, I don't think that a Bigfoot Halloween costume with non-organic entrails and kept in a freezer would be worth US$250,283 and if I had this amount of money, I would have better use for it. However, this piece of "Bigfoot hoax body and display" has generated loads of publicity since August 2008 so it is not possible to place a price tag on that.

In addition to the Bigfoot and display, the winning bidder will also receive personal visit from the current legal owners. Still, who in his right mind would want to splash this amount on just a Bigfoot Halloween costume?
