A friend asked me how a buyer could tell if an item on auction on eBay is authentic and I told him that we could only tell once we have the item in our hands. By then, it may already be too late to ask for a refund, unless we are eligible for Buyer protection that is provided by eBay/PayPal.
In the real eBay world, there are many transactions that are not being paid for by PayPal, you see, so many scammers do get away with the money. Having said this, selling items that are not authentic but with an authentic price tag is just ONE form of scam.
A couple of days ago, I read a news report that mentions that there is one scam on eBay every hour. That is rather scary but I think that if you consider the many international eBay marketplaces and the number of transactions closed on eBay every hour, that sounds like a pretty low rate.
One thing I learned from shopping online is that if it's too good to be true, it probably is!
